The orijin of motion pictures, i.e. cinema’as commonly known, dates back to first film of puplic display presented by Aguste and Luis Lumiere brothers at Grand Cafe of the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris on the 28th of December 1985 Th content of this first program consisted of a 1 minute long subject discussed by Lois Luminere.
Cinema has come a long way since then. It would be safe to say that there is nothing impossible today to display throung cinematography. Now heroes fly, dinasaurs come alive, avatars revive. Good productions in such a challenging industry are certainly awarded. The world’s leading film festivals, and the cinema continues to reward.
Cannes Film Festival ( France )
It is the masterpiece of festivals. Most of the time, it brings together the world’s most famous directors and up and coming film producers. Important productions which their local premiers worldwide. The number of sector representatives, actors and reporters who regularly go to Cannes has never been seen anywhere el in the world. Despite being a place emracing the new innovative moves in cinema for a very long time, Cannes’ rules and traditions can be considered both an obstacle and an advantage. The name ‘Cannes’ cannot be imitated easily. Everyone in the world is aware that it is a brand. However, as most prime corporations, this festival is adapting itself to chage slowly and maintaining its conventionality. Famous American producer and director Steven Spielberg was the chairman of the jury panel at this year’s Cannes Award at the Golden Palm in 1974 for his film ‘ The Sugarland Express ’, became another American director who chaired the jury at Cannes after Tim Burton, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese.
The films of widely respected Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan have frequently been shown at Cannes. Three Monkeys is the third film of the director which is accepted to the competition part of Cannes Film Festival after Distant and Climates, and the fifth feature- length film in total. The Three Monkeys gained Nuri Bilge Ceylan the Best Director award at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
Sundance Film Festival ( USA )
The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most important festivals in the USA and cradle of the independent American cinema move. The festival is held every year in the State of Utah, USA by Sundance İnstitute which was founded by the famous actor Robert Redford in 1981.
Althoung the number of agreements made at the festival is not as it was before the past five years due to economic recession and the extensive retructuring in the sector, even the opponents are not brave enough to miss this festival which is still in a very strong position cammercially. The festival continues to be the showcase for the most anticipated American movies.
Toronto International Film Festival ( Canada )
Toronto is the first essential stop in the long journey to the awards season with its autumn films; the event is the start of the film season. Regarded as the most important film festival of the North America by many, Toronto Festival features first class movies by famous and rising producers only few days ( even few hours ) after their world premiers in Venice. Although the film events in İtaly ( or the world )continue being the biggest attraction, Toronto carries the whole burden of the North America’s film industry ( which is the biggest industry in the world ) and is in the agenda of TIFF which consist of the stage of the regional awards before the Oscars.
Venice Film Festival ( Italy )
For many, Venice is one of the leading festivals as Cannes. Like its French counterpart, it is held in August – September and is a magnet for colorful premiers, stars, parties and paparazzi. For a long time, Venice Film Festival has been a symbol reminding people of how a film festival should be. Venice hosts the most important world movie premiers including major films such as Brokeback Mountain, The Wrestler and A Single Man before the Toronto Festival in North America, wait fort he Canada to make the debut in order to avoid the high costs involved.
İnternotial Documentary Festival ( Holland )
Besides the active documentary socielty, IDFA is also still on the agenda for audiences in North America. A significant number of non – fiction productions made throughout the year are shown in this festival, held annually in Amsterdam. Its forum is the largest joint finance market in Europe for international documentry productions. The festival also brings a large number of audiences together.
Berlin International Film Festival ( Germany )
Held in Berlin since 1952 following the Cold War, Berlinale is one of the most famous cinema events in the world and attracts film producers adn industry from all around the world every year. Participants generally give credit to the event hosting the film festival which accepts both avant – garde and Hollywood productions. Held in February every year, the festival presents the best productions, Golden and Silver Bear awards.
The well – known Turkish director Fatih Akın became the first Turkish director winning the Golden Bear Award at Berlin Film Festival for his project titled Gegen Die Wand ( Against the Wall ) 40 years after Metin Erksan’s Susuz Yaz ( Dry Summer ).
New York Film Festival ( USA )
Although it is not referred to as a discovery festival; New York Festival ( NYFF ) introduces some of the most important films in the global film sector. This masterfully organized event selects a certain number of films from the world’s leading film festivals as well as a smaller number of less recognized films by up and coming film producers. Althoung it is not as influential in defining what is important for America Just like the French New Wavel, it is sill a cultural indicator.
Oscar Awards Ceremony – Akademy Awards ( USA )
The Academy Awards, aka Oscars, is the most famous award ceremony in the world. First held in 1929 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, The Oscar Awards takes place annually in February. The red carpet appearances and the outfits of the guests are talked about for days as much as the awards presented. The Academy Awards are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( AMPAS ). It has 5830 voting members since 2007. 1,311 member actors and actresses comprise the 22% of this number.
This year, the 85th Oscar Awards were presented the winners during a magnificent ceremony held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. While the Argo wins the best film award, this year’s best director award was presented to Ang Lee its film Life of Pi.
Telluride Film Festival ( USA )
What makes Telluride Film festival unique is its mission to show new and classic films in ewual measure throughout the Labor Day holiday. The first class projection and sound system provides a cinema camp experience for audience and it stages intense dialogues and discussions about film and film production. The expositional program also creates oppurtunites for debate amongts the participants. It an exemplary event.
Antalya Altın Portakal ( Golden Orange ) Film Festival ( TURKEY )
İnternotional Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival is Turkey’s leading film festival held in Antalya since 1964. The festival is held annually in autumn by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality ( ABB ) and Antalya Culture Art Foundation ( AKSAV ) at Antalya Culture Center ( AKM ) and Glass Pyramid.
Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival is one of the most established film festivals in Europe and Asia and the longest running in Turkey. The festival has been taking place under the name of International Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival since 2005, also featuring an international competition.
A Golden Orange mini – statues, or Statue of Venüs, had been given as the Golden Orange Award until 2005. During 2005 to 2008 the shape of the award changed. Statue of Venus has been given as the award since 2009. The golden color statue is designed as a woman holding an orange in her left hand.
The 50th Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festival was held last years where the Best Director award was presented to Ramin Matin for his film The Impeccable while the Best Film Award went to The Fall Heaven and The Impeccables.

Kerthagosa, is an ancient building complex erected during the reign of the first King of Klungkung. There is also a temple called Goa Lawah with an impressive amount of bats inside.
Tabanan Regency has an area of 839,33km2 which consists of mountainous areas adn beaches. Bedugul Batonical Garden is surruounded by hills and has three beautiful lakes. Tabanan Regency has many beaches such as Yeh Ganga Beach, Suka Beach, Surabarata Beach, Kleting Beach, Pasut Beach etc. It’s more than just beaches thoungh, there are also famaus temples such as Tanah Lot which is located a short distance off the coast with a great view of the surrounding ocean. Batukaru Temple located on Mount Batukaru and Jatiluwih – both have famous terracing which an can be seen in the many brochures of beautiful Bali.
Badung Regency includes Kuta and Nusa Dua with several famous beaches such as Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Nusa Dua. Uluwatu Temple located at the edge of the cliffs is also a great attraction for tourists. Tanjung Benoa is the place with a lot of different kins of Water Sports.
Gianyar Regency includes, Siyud, Suba and many more beautiful beaches. There are lots of beautiful temples to visit like Goa Gajah Temple, Yeh Pulu temple, Penataran sasih temple, Kebo Edan temple, Pusering Jagat temple, Gunung Kawi Temple and Tirta Empul Temple. In the centre of the regency is Ubud with lush gren areas and the rice fields of Tegalalang. Puri Agung Ubud is located in the heart of Ubud. It was the Ubud government kingdom of the past and is now a center for culture and arts. Events are often held at the front of the Puri.

Built at the end of the 18th century in the northeast of Klungkung Palace, ceiling-paintings meant to show the punishment for those accused of wrongdoing by the Klungkung royal high court, named Kerta Gosa.
